Honolulu_TriathalonLIST Sotheby’s International Realty President Hisashi Kitami led a team of corporate athletes last week at the Honolulu Triathlon held May 17th at Ala Moana Beach Park. In addition to Kitami, “Team LIST” included Kenji Minoda, Toshi Saegusa, Scott Startsman, Mikakao Takemura and Yukiko Yang. The athletes had their own “cheering section” of agents and employees from both the Japan and Hawaii LIST Sotheby’s International Realty offices who came out in support.Honolulu_Triathalon_2015_2

Mr. Kitami, who is as passionate about the Hawaii lifestyle as he is about fitness, competed in the “Corporate Challenge” for the Olympic distance event, which required a 1,500-meter swim, 40K bike race and 10K run. This was his first triathlon and he was in good company, as top-ranking executives from Halekulani Corporation, Aloha Table restaurants, and Resort Trust were among the competitors. It is now a growing trend in Japan for senior executives to compete in triathlons, marathons and similar fitness challenges.

Manu Shelley of the Honolulu Triathlon told us, “The Corporate Challenge is one of our most popular categories, because traditionally many executives and higher rank managers participate. We started advertising the Corporate Challenge last year and it attracted many Japanese and local businesses to enter, attracting more than 1,700 athletes from 10 countries. It is a great way to represent a company and network with the other participants.”

In addition to being a triathlete, Mr. Kitami is an avid surfer. “I love Hawaii and especially enjoy being able to get outside to exercise,” Kitami said. “I love the water and have a deep appreciation for surfing. It’s the ideal way to relax after a long day.”

It seems that corporate executives have come a long way from the “three-martini lunch” and are now looking to fitness as a way to stay competitive in the business world. Indeed, according to participant Scott Startsman, “many busy business people today want to continually push and challenge themselves in new ways.” This could also explain why more luxury residences feature home gyms, rather than wet bars!

Steinway & Sons logo

For the first time, representatives of Steinway & Sons will be in Hawaii this week for several historic public and private sales events.

LIST Sotheby’s International Realty got to take a closer look at the enduring quality and brand legacy of Steinway & Sons, when George Nellas, President and Owner of Piano Planet, spoke to us at a recent company gathering. Piano Planet is the exclusive home to Steinway & Sons in Hawaii.

Steinway and Sotheby’s often share headlines like the Sotheby’s Auction to Benefit (RED) where a custom Steinway piano was the biggest ticket item sold.

Stealing the show, however, was our own Jeff Fox, who knocked our socks off while masterfully demonstrating the high quality instrument that George had temporarily installed at the Waialae County Club for our presentation.

Afterwards, George spoke to us about the relationship between the arts and success — music lessons in particular. In school, students who study music score 34% higher on SAT tests. Music is very important in a child’s education. It’s more important than people realize.

Playing an instrument is actually physical fitness or exercise for your brain. It may improve spatial-temporal reasoning, a cornerstone for problem solving.

Such love of music and it’s profound benefits are some of the reasons George has dedicated over 35 years of expertise to this endeavor. “I enjoy seeing kids start out”, says George. “They get their first piano and become very successful. Many take off and become professors, singers, and even concert pianists. Now twenty years later they have their own kids. All the great artists started somewhere.”

As a successful musician with an impressive background, George opened Piano Planet on Oahu in 2001. Growing up in Peoria, Illinois he learned to play a school instrument at age 10. Many musicians influenced him during the 60‘s, especially “The Animals” an English band, “The Doors,” and “Paul Revere and the Raiders.”

He loved the old cronies too like Perry Como. But, it was seeing the Beatles on television that really got his attention! That’s when he became obsessed with music and performing. He got a guitar, formed his own band, and loved the attention it attracted. As they progressed and got better, he was able to make a living by playing for many years. They went on the road and toured all over the Midwest. Today, he still enjoys playing the guitar and piano at home for his own pleasure.

It’s easy to see how George Nellas became successful. He rightfully earned the reputation of being a “giver” who donates the use of many pianos at no charge to countless musicians, organizations, piano teachers, and piano recitals. He is a man of high integrity who is professional, fair, caring and knowledgeable.

In our society people who study music do better, are focused, and more successful in life. Using that part of the brain when you’re younger makes a difference. A parent might say, “Oh well, he only played for three years,” but George tells them, “Even if they quit, it’s still for the better just to have the experience of learning an instrument.”
