Hale MauliolaYuki S. Takenaka at List Sotheby’s International Realty in Honolulu, Hawaii has a passion for helping the community. She took the initiative to find out about a new project, Hale Mauliloa, that will provide temporary shelter for about 75 – 100 homeless people. There are nearly 5,000 homeless people on Oahu, about 2,000 of whom are unsheltered.

When asked how she got involved with the project, Yuki simply said, “It’s a natural. We’re in the business of providing homes, and here was an opportunity to do just that.” “Homes contribute to how we feel about ourselves.” “There’s a definite connection between homes and people, and it’s my responsibility to help make that connection.” Yuki went on, “I wanted to be proactive and give back to my community.  I’ve been successful enough in real estate. I think there’s more to life than being a realtor and getting a commission, so the question was – “What’s next?” “Is that all there is?”

So, what are the next steps?

Based on Yuki’s visit to the site, the greatest needs are the following:

  1. Solar panels –  to provide electricity for the units which are constructed from modified shipping containers.
  2. Astro turf –  ground cover since the site is built on solid concrete.
  3. Outdoor furniture and planters –  to create a more pleasant environment and give residents a sense of home.

More About Hale Mauliloa:

These units will be provided at no cost to qualified residents for about two months while they participate in a service plan that will help them transition to more permanent housing. People will not be allowed to pitch their tents or construct temporary structures at the project site.  The location is just past the access bridge into Sand Island, but is not part of the Sand Island State Park or any existing businesses.  Site map here.

Initial construction will cost about $500,000 to build the modular units, common areas, and infrastructure.  The city will spend about $1.5 million a year on support services for the Hale Mauliola residents.

Hawaii’s Institute for Human Services (IHS) will coordinate case management, support services, and housing and shelter referrals. Other agencies assisting with the project include local nonprofit Helping Hands Hawaii, Mental Health Kokua/Save Haven, St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, We Are Oceania — A Program of Partners in Development Foundation, and Volunteer Legal Services.

IHS expects to serve roughly 250 people during the first year of operations.

Hale Mauliola will be a point of entry into Honolulu’s system of homeless services known as the Continuum of Care, and be a centralized location where homeless individuals can go for basic services, and begin the transition out of homelessness.
